Many of us tend to believe that happiness lives somewhere in the future. That it’s waiting at the finish line of a dream we’re chasing, in a place we’ve always wanted to visit, or in a version of ourselves we haven’t become yet. We tell ourselves, “Once I get there, then I’ll be happy.” So we bust our asses every single day thinking the more effort we pour in, the closer we get to happiness itself.

But do we really need to wait?

Do we really need to wait for years to earn enough money to buy the things we’ve always dreamed of? To work another year just to finally afford a plane ticket to a destination we’ve romanticized in our minds? To reach a certain job title, income, body type, or lifestyle before we allow ourselves to feel joy?

What if we chose to be happy now?

Not the fake, forced kind of happiness. Not the “pretend everything is perfect” type. But a grounded, honest kind of happiness- the kind that exists even while you’re tired, even while you’re still figuring things out, even while life feels messy and uncertain.

What if we learned to be happy in the middle of becoming?

While saving for something we badly want. While waiting for years to roll by. While waking up early, commuting, working long hours, and putting aside money little by little. While chasing long-term dreams that don’t come with instant rewards. What if happiness wasn’t the reward at the end- but something we practiced along the way?

Because the truth is, life doesn’t pause while we wait to arrive somewhere. Days keep passing. Years keep moving. And if we keep telling ourselves, “I’ll be happy once…” we might wake up one day realizing we spent most of our life waiting instead of living.

So how do we choose happiness now?

Start with the simplest thing: waking up and appreciating that you’re alive.

It sounds cliché, but it’s real. You woke up today. You’re breathing. You’re still here. That alone is something not everyone gets. Some dreams don’t even get the chance to be chased. Some lives end too early. When you really sit with that truth, even for a moment, it shifts something inside you.

Appreciate yourself for every milestone you cross- especially the small ones.

We often overlook how far we’ve already come because we’re too focused on how far we still need to go. But growth doesn’t only live in big achievements. Sometimes it looks like getting through a hard week without giving up. Sometimes it’s choosing rest instead of burnout. Sometimes it’s showing up even when motivation is gone.

Celebrate yourself. Treat yourself to a milk tea after a long day. Buy yourself a good meal. Take a quiet walk. Sit with music you love. It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant. It just has to remind you that your effort matters.

Learn to find joy in ordinary moments.

Happiness isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s subtle. It’s the calm you feel when the day finally slows down. The comfort of familiar routines. Laughing at something stupid. Feeling proud of yourself for staying consistent. These moments may seem small, but they make up most of life.

Stop postponing happiness as if it’s a luxury you don’t deserve yet.

Yes, achieving your dreams will feel amazing. Traveling to that place you’ve always imagined will bring joy. Reaching your goals will be deeply fulfilling. But don’t make the mistake of believing those things are the only reasons you’re allowed to be happy.

Don’t let years roll by in quiet misery because you’re convinced happiness lives somewhere else.

You can want more and still appreciate what you have. You can work hard and still allow yourself to smile. You can be ambitious and grateful at the same time. These things don’t cancel each other out.

Choosing to be happy every day doesn’t mean life will always be easy. It means you’re choosing to live fully despite the challenges. It means you’re refusing to let your joy be held hostage by timelines, achievements, or external validation.

So yes- keep chasing your dreams. Keep working hard. Keep planning for the future.

But don’t wait until you “make it” to feel alive.

Choose happiness now. Choose it today. Choose it in the middle of the journey.
