Every bride dreams of being the most beautiful woman on her big day. Before she says the much-awaited “I do,” her face becomes the canvas of a makeup artist- her quiet wish simply to feel as radiant as Aphrodite herself. She desires a flawless blend of colors, a look where every detail harmonizes seamlessly. Eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, jawline- all must be in perfect balance, so that from any angle, no imperfection dares to show.

And her hair? Ah, that’s another masterpiece in the making. Whether it’s a timeless bridal updo with soft, romantic waves, a graceful low bun with delicate tendrils framing the face, or a half-up style adorned with twists and floral accents- her hairstyle holds the power to define her confidence. Every strand matters. The hairstylist must ensure not a single wisp is out of place.

It’s not an exaggeration. A bride must feel at peace and confident in how she looks- her hair, her makeup, her accessories, her dress. Why shouldn’t she? It’s her day, after all. She is entitled to perfection. That’s why most brides-to-be hire a hairstylist and makeup artist months- sometimes even a year- in advance, to ensure that the hours leading up to their vows are as calm and flawless as possible.

During my own wedding, I didn’t have the luxury of booking a hairstylist a year ahead. (You can read that story here.) My makeup artist was the only exception. I chose not to hire one- not because I’m skilled at doing bridal makeup, but because I didn’t feel the need to impress anyone with it. I wanted my natural features to carry me down the aisle. I’ve never been a fan of heavy makeup; my go-to trifecta has always been lipstick, mascara, and eyebrow pencil. Sometimes I’d add a touch of blush or lip liner, but anything beyond that felt too much.

On my wedding day, I wore Chanel’s Burning Red lipstick. Normally, I’d use Revlon, but Chanel held sentimental value. At the start of our relationship, my husband gifted me that very shade- it was my first introduction to the brand. Since then, it became my signature for special occasions. Wearing it on one of the most meaningful days of my life felt deeply intentional, almost symbolic.

My eyebrow pencil and lip liner were from Sephora. The lip liner, in particular, became extra special because of my sister-in-law. Though we hadn’t met before the wedding, she came to my room just as my hairstylist was finishing up. I had just finished perfecting my brows and was about to outline my lips- but my hands were trembling. I asked her if she could help, and she gladly did. That simple gesture made my heart full.

I also wore mascara to lift my lashes and a moisturizer to protect my skin from the cold. I thought that was all- until another surprise came. My husband’s family friend, Aunt Olga, sent me a beautiful necklace from her personal collection. I hadn’t planned to wear any accessories aside from my earrings, but when I saw the necklace, I couldn’t resist. It became my “something old- or perhaps something new.” My husband was touched to see me wearing it.

In the end, with my almost-natural makeup, a romantic bouquet in shades of light pink, dusty rose, and deep burgundy, and a necklace that carried a story, I walked down the aisle with confidence- and love shining through every detail.

Now, I realize that my wedding look wasn’t just about beauty- it was about memory. Every product I used, every curl in my hair, every petal in my bouquet carried a story, a piece of the people who made that day special. My lipstick reminded me of my husband’s first thoughtful gift; my sister-in-law’s gentle hand held the warmth of new family; the necklace spoke of love passed down through time. Every detail held a piece of love and memory. When I look back at my wedding photos, I see not just my face, but the emotions and moments that shaped that day.
