One of my most memorable experiences interacting with nature happened in Thailand. In the heart of bustling Bangkok, Chatuchak Market is a magnet for tourists, especially on weekends, when the crowds swarm the countless stalls. But if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat amidst the chaos, Chatuchak Park is just a short 3-minute walk away, offering a serene escape from the labyrinth of clothing vendors and the rush of visitors.

It’s truly an oasis in the midst of the concrete jungle. Once you step into the park, you’re immediately transported away from the noise and traffic of the city. The only sign you’re still in Bangkok is the faint silhouette of towering skyscrapers in the distance, which slowly fade as you venture deeper into the greenery. The park’s intertwined tree canopies create a peaceful canopy of shade, allowing you to relax and reconnect with nature.

One of the most unexpected and exciting moments in the park was when a large water monitor lizard casually strolled right in front of me. Its slow, deliberate movements made me pause in awe as it slinked through the underbrush, completely unfazed by the people around it. The sheer size of the lizard, with its glossy, patterned skin, was both intimidating and fascinating at the same time. It felt like I was in the middle of a wildlife documentary, except I was living it.

If you’re lucky enough to have a snack with you, the park also offers a fun opportunity to interact with the local squirrels. With a handful of peanuts or fruit, you can easily lure them out, and they’ll come right up to you. I watched in delight as a small, bold squirrel nibbled in front of me, its tiny paws gripping the food. The whole experience felt like a special moment, an unplanned connection with the wildlife that thrives in this urban park.
