It’s a cool feeling. Then suddenly-one drop, two drops-until the simple drizzle becomes a downpour. People start squeezing themselves into the shade. I hear groans and the grinding of teeth. Maybe they’re exasperated that their appointments getting delayed is inevitable, or maybe just the idea of being late makes them anxious.
I see calm faces, some fuming, but most are blank- just staring into the distance. Probably lost in their reverie. It’s hard to tell whether they’re watching the rain, or if the rain itself is pulling them back down memory lane.
Some look like they belong to the corporate world; others are nannies with baby strollers in front of them. I wonder what the latter are thinking as they stare at the babies, who stare back at them with pure innocence.
A giggle makes me turn to my far left, where I’m greeted by a smiling toddler. I smile back, and another giggle escapes her mouth. Maybe she, too, is wondering what I’m thinking in this moment of temporary refuge.
